Funny Money – The Lighter Side of Payments with WAPPoint

Celebrating 25 Years of Small Business Stories, One Laugh at a Time

At WAPPoint, we’ve seen a lot over the past 25 years — booming businesses, evolving tech, and incredible growth. But let’s be honest: some of the best moments have come with a side of laughter.

This month, as part of our 25-year celebration, we’re rolling out “Funny Money” — a tribute to the weird, the wonderful, and the downright hilarious moments our merchants have had at the till. Because running a business isn’t just about balancing the books — it’s about the stories that keep us going!

😄 The Funniest Things Our Merchants Have Heard

“Do you guys sell Wi-Fi here?”
One of our coffee shop clients recalls a tourist walking in, sniffing the air, and saying, “Mmm, smells like good Wi-Fi in here.” Turns out, they thought “cappuccino” was some kind of broadband upgrade. Hey, at least they still bought a muffin.

“Can I pay in exposure?”
A boutique owner in Cape Town told us about a very enthusiastic “influencer” who tried to pay for a designer bag with… a shout-out on Instagram. The POS didn’t have an “Exposure” payment method, so they settled for a card payment.

A 2-for-1 deal gone sideways
One merchant ran a “buy one, get one free” deal. A customer tried to pay half the price and take both items — “Because technically, I’m only paying for one, right?” We’ll call that a creative approach to math.

💸 Weirdest Payments Processed on Our POS

Goats, socks, and a sports car?
Yes. All three. From livestock markets to quirky side hustles, our devices have handled the full spectrum of small business commerce. One merchant even processed a payment for a sports car and wanted to put it on the credit card over a 36-month budget period. Unfortunately, we had to decline this transaction.

Funny Money: WAPPoint Staff Stories

| STORY 1: A lady phoned in and she was in a panic as she needed to take payment and the cashier wasn’t there. She told me the machine doesn’t work at all, no matter where she taps on the device, nothing happens! She can only see a battery charging on the screen and I must pretty please be her saviour today. I told her don’t worry, I can fix this for her in 3 seconds! So I told her to hold the power button in for 3 seconds and in 30 seconds, she’ll be able to take payment – the device was just off. We had a nice laugh together at her blonde moment. | STORY 2: A developer kept saying his tap doesn’t work, so I noticed he is just flashing the card on the machine. I told him “Tap it like you mean it”, he laughed, but it worked and it became a catch phrase for tap transactions.

It was 2:47 AM when my phone jolted me awake — a client had signal issues, we had do a sim swap and profile download. I had to work out the swan code so that device can work again. Half-asleep but trying to sound alive, I asked for the number on her screen and grabbed the formula to calculate the code. We tried the first code. “Incorrect,” said the device. Second try — wrong again. Third — still no luck. By the fourth attempt, tension was high and her patience was low. Then it hit me: I’d been using the wrong formula the entire time. Without admitting a thing, I calmly said, “Let’s try just one more time. I’ve got a good feeling about this one.” I did the correct calculation, gave her the pin, and boom — it worked. She cheered like I’d just hacked NASA. I pretended I knew what I was doing all along. Some call it tech support. I call it midnight magic.
